Happy Design System

HappyCo↗︎ offers a collection of multifamily software & services designed to centralise property operations and improve the resident experience. Think inspections, work orders and maintenance tools used by the biggest multifamily companies in the world.

During my time at, I led design as a triad leader in the Unified Experience Team. The team’s mission was to build, document, and advise on solutions that deliver on our brand promises and create cohesion within HappyCo’s ecosystem of products. It is a key differentiator of the company and the biggest proponent was the Happy Design System.

SNAPSHOT

PROBLEM

HappyCo faced a significant inconsistency problem. As the company scaled, the styling became highly variable and the user experience felt disconnected between products and native mobile applications. The designer and developer experience was also adversely affected, as feature delivery priorities surmounted front-end attention. This isn't uncommon, but given usability is a core brand differentiator for the company, capacity was tasked to the team to do all that we could to align our products.

SOLUTION

  1. Consistency and brand cohesion: We wanted to ensure that our brand identity remained consistent and cohesive.

  2. Efficiency and scalability: Streamline our design and development processes as much as possible. Why solve component problems, when you should be solving the customers?

  3. Collaboration and cross-functional alignment: Foster collaboration and alignment among our teams and open the door to a model allowing contribution.

OUTCOME

From a design perspective, since taking over last February, the system has gone from an average of 3000 component insertions a week, to closer to 12500 - a 317% increase. We've successfully integrated variables, which is making for a more seamless engineer handover and component documentation is as thorough as ever.

In addition, and most importantly, there's been a pivotal shift within our product teams to return to using the Happy Design System as the source of truth for components and patterns. Though, 'speed' can sometimes be compromised, we're seeing a more consistent experience for our customers, highlighted by customers navigating between products with the Experience Switcher↗︎.
